Chiropractors apply adjustments and other supportive measures that uniquely facilitate the body’s awesome self-healing mechanisms. They measurably impact the central nervous system and from that, all else follows.

Undiagnosed and unaddressed ADHD can all but destroy a person.

The prisons are full of people with undiagnosed ADHD, as are the halls of the unemployed, the addicted, the impoverished, and the depressed. It is particularly alarming that at least 80% of adults who have ADHD do not know that they have this potentially devastating condition. Hence there is a magnificent opportunity for the clinician to intervene dramatically in the lives of people who have ADHD.

Dr. Hallowell’s strength-based approach begins with the identification of talents and strengths as well as the recognition of the problems and obstacles in the patient’s life. The chiropractor helps the patient develop strategies at home, work, or school that focus on concrete, positive change. This is what we refer to as the humanistic side of the SHINE protocol.

The chiropractor then focuses on what we call the vitalistic side. They begin with a detailed intake and assessment, including neural spinal and neuro-behavioral testing. They then offer an attention scoring system that uses a piece of modern technology. If there is a history of concussion or brain based injury they also benchmark that using standardized , web based questionnaires.

Once the assessment is complete they offer a plan of care that spans 90 days aimed at achieving specific, pre-identified outcomes. The doctor considers the physical inputs that will enhance hemispheric and cerebellar acuity. Metabolic and dietary assessments, done mostly by questionnaires to limit the need for advanced screening technologies, also figure into the care plan. The need for supplementation can be accessed and the patient advised. In addition, a full home based program augments the care model. This will include core strength, balance and movement training. Optical and metronome sensory inputs may be added as well.

In all, the doctor will be responsible for the initial evaluation and intake; the reviewing of the algorithms of care and the adjustive care model. The application of the Hallowell strength-based protocol, aimed at restoring hope, ambition, and skills, will be embedded in all aspects of the care.

At 90 days, a neuroplastic evaluation will assess the degree of response and change. A re-assesment using the original testing benchmarks will be performed. As neural retraining is an ongoing endeavour, the patient will be advised and encouraged to continue his or her care both at home and in the office with periodic follow-up appointments.
